[edit] Basic Samba

Samba will allow you to access shared folders on the WL-HDD from windows, other Linux computers or any other computer that supports the Samba protocol.

For this samba guide, we'll set up samba for guest account access. This is not very secure as anybody on the LAN can access the shared folders but for most people this is not a problem as most people are hacking their WL-HDD on home networks anyway.

[edit] Samba Script

This script will install 'Basic Samba' functionality onto your WL-HDD. All you have to do is run the script and follow instructions.

This script has not been tested and consequently may not work. Please give me any feedback you can. Thanks

[edit] NMBD Nameserver

NMBD is a nameserver daemon that will broadcast your WL-HDD on your LAN. You can set the name of the WL-HDD to whatever you want and it will appear in 'My Network Places' on a windows computer. This guide will take you through some simple steps to get this up and running.

[edit] Samba with Users

This guide will allow samba to be user protected on a LAN. Rather than using the samba guest account which is considered rather insecure, users will have to have a username and password to use samba.

[edit] Changing samba location

This guide will allow you to move your samba setup to the location /opt/etc/samba which is used throughout these guides.

[edit] Samba Password Protect

This guide will allow you to setup samba shares so that only certain users or groups are able to access each individual share.

[edit] Samba Troubleshooting

Some common errors and some solutions to them.

[edit] Change File and Directory Mask

This guide will allow you to set the default permissions for files and directories created using the Samba protocol.

[edit] OpenVPN

THis guide will allow you to install and set up an OpenVPN server on your WL-HDD and an OpenVPN client on a Windows XP computer.

OpenVPN allows you to access samba shares securely, both on a LAN or over WAN!!!
